I have very interesting hobbies like archeology and photography.
I had this idea that I could hire myself out as a person to go on archeological digs and dig, without any training! I actually wrote to a number of archeology departments and offered up my services.
I fell in love with words in all languages, and I read everything I could find, particularly myths and legends and histories and archeology and any novels.
In 1990, I was an undergraduate freshman archeology major sneaking over to the English building and unearthing an amazing repository of books I'd never even suspected. By 1998, I'd have my Ph.D.
Belloq: You and I are very much alike. Archeology is our religion, yet we have both fallen from the pure faith. Our methods have not differed as much as you pretend. I am but a shadowy reflection of you. It would take only a nudge to make you like me. To push you out of the light.
Indiana: Now you're getting nasty.
[Belloq and the Nazis are walking and arguing]
Belloq: I told you not to be premature in your communique to Berlin. Archeology is not an exact science. It does not deal in time schedules!
Dietrich: The Fuhrer is not a patient man. He demands constant reports. You led me to believe...
Belloq: [interrupting him] Nothing! I made
no promises! I merely said it looked very favorable. Besides, with the information in our possession, my calculations were correct.
Indiana Jones: [Lecturing in class] Archeology is the search for fact, not truth. If it's truth you're interested in, Dr. Tyree's Philosophy class is right down the hall.
[the students laugh]
Indiana Jones: So forget any ideas you've got about lost cities, exotic travel, and digging up the world. We do not follow maps to buried treasure, and "X"
never, ever marks the spot.
[Words he will learn to eat, upon following a series of Roman numerals through a Venetian library in order to locate a hidden passage. Said passage is marked with the Roman numeral for "10" - an "X"!]
Indiana Jones: 70% of all archeology is done in the library. Researching. Reading. We cannot afford to take mythology at face value.
