Bagheera: Mowgli.
Baloo: Where is he?
Bagheera: In the pit.
Baloo: In the WHAT?
Bagheera: Is this your teaching?
Baloo: Oh, come on! You know I'd never teach him to mess around with elephants.
Mowgli: Don't be mad, okay?
Bagheera: Why would I be mad?
Mowgli: 'Cause you're always mad when I do stuff. You gotta promise not to be mad THIS time.
Bagheera: Show me, then I'll decide.
Bagheera: [softly and urgently] Down!
Mowgli: What, now we have to bow at the buffalo, too?
Bagheera: Listen to me. This is not a game. You're gonna run to that ravine.
Mowgli: What are you talking about?
Bagheera: Go to the north where the sky glows at night. I'll find you on that
path.
Mowgli: Bagheera, I'm not taking one more step until...
[Shere Khan leaps roaring from the tall grass. Mowgli ducks and Bagheera deflects the attack. The two cats fight while Mowgli runs to the ravine. Shere Khan knocks Bagheera out, sees Mowgli and pursues]
Bagheera: [calls out, unable to rise] Run, Mowgli! Run!
King Louie: [singing] Now you might think it's ridiculous / That me, a gigantopithecus / Would ever dream, I'd like to team / With the likes of you, man-cub / But together, we'd have powers / All the jungle's treasures, ours / I got desire, you got the fire / But the dream I dream takes two / So, ooh, I wanna be like you / I wanna use that flame, just the same / You can do / Oh,
how magnificus it would be / A gigantipithicus like me / Could learn to do like you humans do.
Baloo: [climbing a cliff, frightened] A bird. That can't be a good sign.
Bagheera: [alongside him] Baloo, look at me. Look at nothing but me. You're doing fine.
Baloo: All right I'm coming. I'm coming.
Mowgli: [to Kaa] Go away! Leave me alone!
Kaa: [trying to get Mowgli to look into his eyes] Let me look at you.
[Mowgli resists]
Kaa: You don't want me to look at you? Then you look at me.
Kaa: [hypnotizing Mowgli and coiling him up] Please, go to sleep, sleep tight little man-cub, rest in peace... sleep... sleep...
Mowgli: Ba... Bagheera?
[chokes]
Bagheera: Now, it's no use arguing anymore. No more talk until morning.
Kaa: [laughs] He won't be here in the morning.
[starts to eat
Mowgli]
Bagheera: [almost asleep, but soon notices Kaa about to devour Mowgli] Huh? Oh yes, he will, I... KAA! HOLD IT, KAA!
[smacks Kaa in the face]
Bagheera: Baloo, birds of a feather should flock together. You wouldn't marry a panther now, would you?
Baloo: I don't know.
[laughs]
Baloo: Come to think of it, no panther has ever asked me. Ha-ha.
Bagheera: [getting irritated] Baloo, you've got to be serious...
Baloo: Oh, stop
worrying, Baggy! Stop worrying! I'll take care of him.
Bagheera: Yes, like you did when the monkeys kidnapped him, huh?
Baloo: Can't a guy make one mistake?
Bagheera: Not in the jungle! And another thing, sooner or later Mowgli will meet Shere Khan.
Baloo: The tiger? What's he got against the kid?
Bagheera: He hates man with a vengenance. You know that! Because he fears man's gun and man's fire.
Baloo: But little Mowgli don't have those things.
Bagheera: Shere Khan won't wait until he does. He'll get Mowgli while he's young and helpless. Just one swipe!
Baloo: Oh! Well, what... what are we going to
do?
Bagheera: Do what's best for the boy.
Baloo: You better believe it! You name it, I'll do it.
Bagheera: Good. Then make Mowgli go to the man-village.
Baloo: Are you out of your mind? I promised him that he could stay here in the jungle with me.
Bagheera: Well, that's just the
point! As long as he remains with you, he's in danger! So, it's up to you.
Baloo: Why me?
Bagheera: B-because he won't listen to me.
Baloo: But I love that kid.
[sniffs]
Baloo: I love him like he was my own cub!
Bagheera: Then think what's best for Mowgli, and not
yourself.
Baloo: Uh... well, can't... well, can't I wait until morning?
Bagheera: It's morning now. Go on Baloo.
[Baloo sighs and approaches Mowgli who is asleep]
Baloo: Oh boy!
King Louie: Where you goin', man-cub?
Mowgli: Stay away from me!
King Louie: You don't have anyone now. I'm your only hope. I can make it real good for you here. Where else you gonna go?
Mowgli: I'll go back to the pack! I'll go back to Akela!
King Louie: Akela? Oh. You didn't hear?
Shere Khan killed him. Must've been on account of you.
Mowgli: No! You're lying!
Mowgli: Bagheera!
Bagheera: Mowgli? Stay there. We'll come around to you.
Mowgli: Is it true?
Bagheera: What?
Mowgli: Is Akela dead?
Bagheera: We were going to tell you.
Mowgli: You knew! You both knew! And nobody did anything about it!
Baloo: Kid, just hold on.
Mowgli: Someone's gotta do something!
[Kaa has hypnotized Mowgli into a deep sleep]
Kaa: You're s-s-snoring.
Mowgli: [half-asleep] Sorry.
Baloo: [Mowgli is almost at the man-village entrance] Mowgli, come back, come back!
Bagheera: [encouragingly] Go on, go on!
Kaa: [after being hit by Bagheera] Ooh, my s-s-sinus. You have just made a s-s-s-serious mistake, my friend. A very s-s-s-stupid...
Bagheera: N-n-now, Kaa, I was...
Kaa: ...mis-s-stake. Look me in the eye when I'm speaking to you.
Bagheera: [has one eye closed to avoid being hypnotized] No, please, Kaa...
Kaa: Both eyes, if you please.
[Bagheera is fully hypnotized]
Kaa: You have just s-s-sealed your doom.
[just as Kaa is about to eat Bagheera, Mowgli pushes Kaa's body off the tree; he falls in a pile on the ground]
Colonel Hathi: [as Bagheera tries to appeal to him about searching for Mowgli] Sorry, Bagheera, fortunes of war and all that sort of thing, you know.
Winifred: [walking up to Hathi] This has gone far enough! Far enough!
[stands in Hathi's way]
Winifred: Now just a minute, you pompous old windbag!
Colonel
Hathi: Winifred, what are you doing out of ranks?
Winifred: Never mind! How would you like to have our boy lost and alone in the jungle?
Colonel Hathi: Our son?
[close to a mumble]
Colonel Hathi: Alone?
[out loud]
Colonel Hathi: But Winifred, old girl, that's an entirely different
matter!
Winifred: Hmph!
Colonel Hathi: [proudly] Different entirely.
Winifred: That little boy is no different than our own son. Now you help find him or I'm taking over command!
Colonel Hathi: What? A female leading my herd? Utterly preposterous!
Junior: Pop, the man cub and I
are friends. He'll get hurt if we don't find him. Please, Pop, sir, please?
Colonel Hathi: [softening up a tinge] Now don't you worry, son. Your father had a plan in mind all the time.
Winifred: [smirks smugly]
[sarcastically]
Winifred: Sure, you did.
